If I had a student who came to me looking for someone to confide in about their sexual orientation I would what to make sure I gave my complete attention, really listening to what this student has to say before giving any advice. I would want the student to feel comfortable and know that what they say to me stays confidential to me. I would let the student know that my door is always open if they need someone to talk to. This is such a vulnerble stage and you as the teacher really need to be careful what you say because if a student would actually come to you as their teacher for such an issue i think this really shows how much this student thinks of you and most likely shows how much your advice will mean.
For the artroom i think its important to set rules at the beginning of class. I know some teachers have the students make out the list of rules for the class at the beginning of the semesters. I like this because it gives the students more ownership for the class and their set guidelines. As the teacher its important to let the students know that the artroom is like their own community and show that they are able to express themselve individually however suits them.

Good for you. I like the thought of taking ownership of the classroom and your open door policy. Students will really appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteconfidentiality is very important. Glad you pointed that out!
